Stock Number

A unique internal identifier assigned by the dealership to each vehicle in inventory.

Definition

A stock number is a dealer-assigned alphanumeric code used to identify and track a specific vehicle within the dealership's inventory. Unlike the VIN, which is manufacturer-assigned and universal, stock numbers are internal and vary by dealership. They are used in DMS systems, on lot tags, in advertising feeds, and for internal communications. Consistent stock number formatting helps with inventory audits, advertising feed hygiene, and cross-referencing between systems.
